“It is always the simple that produces the marvelous.”

Amelia Edith Huddleston Barr, British novelist and teacher

Great news! Bleckley House Gifts is officially opening on September 5th! Mark your calendars! In the meantime, you can preview what’s in store here.

And what am I doing to prepare? Well, I’m working on lots of things, of course! Like curating even more lovely products for you, and choosing which tissue paper to use when I ship things to you, and then thinking maybe I shouldn’t use tissue paper because it might get crumpled during the shipping process and then you’ll open the box and be sad! What will I decide?! You’ll have to order something to find out! 🙂

I’m also posting to social media, and while I’m there, I’m getting a tad bit distracted by these things on Instagram called “Stories,” which I am a little suspicious of, but for you my friend, I will attempt! I’m writing adorable little snippets to describe the adorable gifts you’re going to want to give everyone you know. Including yourself. Because believe me, there are some good things, like this Distractables Coloring Book by Free Period Press!

In the midst of all this chaos (ahem, excuse me, excitement!) to prepare for the official day when you can actually click on that bar of soap or candle and purchase it, I am facing lots of decisions. In fact, aren’t we all facing a lot of decisions right now? Will your kids go to school or will you keep them home? Will you go to the grocery store or are you exhausted and plan to order take out? There’s a lot to be said for keeping it simple in the very few parts of your life where you can make your own decisions – especially when choosing which gifts to serve as your presence during these unique times.

Now, if you have read any of my other blog posts, then you already know that I love connecting unusual information – I simply cannot resist researching whatever I am writing about and sharing that knowledge with you all! I am determined to spread knowledge, as well as great gift ideas.

I’m sure you have already heard of the K.I.S.S. acronym. It stands for many things, including “Keep It Simple Stupid” or “Keep It Simple Silly” if you want to be a little more polite. Whatever you choose to say, it is genuinely helpful in pretty much every life situation. Fun fact: The K.I.S.S. principle was promoted in 1960 by the US Navy. Basically, the theory is that most things work best if you keep them as simple as possible. So, any unnecessary complication should be avoided. Well I’m on board with that!

We’ve all experienced the feeling that we need to “go big or go home” with gifts. We run around trying to find the elusive “perfect” gift, only to find that a very simple gift given with intention (maybe a note with a few kind words?) would have been not only better received, but also much easier on us!

Which brings me to the fable of The Fox and The Cat. In this very old tale from Aesop’s fables, a fox and a cat are talking about the different tips and tricks they have to get out of tough situations. The fox has like a million ways to handle it, while the cat says he (or she) only has one. In the end, some hunters show up and the cat runs up a tree and gets away successfully. Meanwhile, Mr. Fox is trapped by the hunters because he was too busy thinking of ways to get away!

We won’t reflect too long on what actually happens to Mr. Fox in the end… we’ll just say they wanted him as a pet and he lived a nice long life and ate lots of treats. Moral of the story: Keep It Simple and avoid being caught by hunters! Just kidding. For me, this story reminds me to keep it simple, and avoid the unnecessary time and money spent on gifts that you don’t love.

Depending on who you are and the value you place on gifts, selecting gifts can be either a very serious and emotional experience or it can be a stressful and confusing one. Or, if you’re like my husband, it can be a last minute, grab-and-go type scenario. There are so many gifts out there! I mean, personally, I googled “gift ideas” the other day and was quite overwhelmed! Why is this?

According to the American Psychological Association, The Dilemma of Too Many Choices is a true struggle. You as a consumer have choices. For this very reason, I decided to open Bleckley House Gifts. I recognized that there were lots and lots of gifts out there, and I could go to any number of stores and buy anything for anyone.

More times than I’d like to admit, I found myself in the middle of a huge store full of people on the week of Christmas, trying to figure out what to give my family members and feeling like everything was just…not quite right or (honestly) a piece of you-know-what. Then, when I did find something that might work, being disappointed in the quality of the product. How could I keep participating in this cycle of low quality, mass produced gifts and feel good about what I was giving my loved ones? It all seemed way more complicated than it needed to be. Couldn’t there be a better way?

You deserve better. You deserve to shop with confidence, knowing that you are buying the best products that you can get, that are made in the United States, often just a few cities away. You deserve to be known for the quality of your gifts, not the quantity. And the small businesses everywhere who are creating unique products deserve to have your support. They are creative, hard working, and also want to give you the best of their talents. It’s a win-win-win kind of situation. You win, small businesses win, and the recipients of your gifts win the most.

And that’s where Bleckley House Gifts begins. From my vision of a place where you can feel wonderful about the products you are buying for your loved ones. I have been and will continue to curate each and every product I sell. When you read about my Values and my passion for quality and craftsmanship, I hope you understand how truly important this is to me.

When you visit Bleckley House Gifts, I want you to feel like you just found the best little shop in town…but it’s online, so you can shop from anywhere! I even offer free local delivery to certain areas in Greenville and the upstate, just to make it all the sweeter.

Here are just a few of the special gifts you can already see on my shop page:
